Autumn is the time of change and there’s a decent wave of activism moving over the pond to Europe as well. American environmentalist Bill McKibben, charismatic leader of the anti-carbon campaign group 350.org, is touring together with his crew and an eloquent entourage of climate leaders in order to distribute their manifesto and spread the idea of “divestment” as important step to battle the downward spiral of climate change. After recent events in Berlin and Amsterdam the movement is stopping over in Edinburgh tonight before moving south to Birmingham and finally making it to London on Friday from where the final show will be livestreamed across Europe.
The Fossil Free Europe Tour isn’t your typical lecture – it will include speakers from across social movements, powerful videos, and music from the ground-breaking artist Filastine. We’ll hear stories from student activists, faith campaigners, community energy leaders, and will be joined on video by the likes of author Naomi Klein and former Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Similar sell-out tours in the USA and Australia already pointed a finger at the root of environmental evil, demonstrating how the fossil fuel industry is destroying our climate and forming “the greatest threat humanity has ever faced”. The Fossil Free Campaign will not only raise questions but also provide answers and illustrate a potential approach to essential change in times of exploited resources and climate crisis.
