Moments ~ keeping pace with life

What is it that turns minutes into moments?

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”  ~ Henry David Thoreau

This was the quote Candace opened her “mind’s stroll” with, introducing the wonderful “Slow Moments Project“. Thoreau’s words seemed like the contour, but it was her words that filled this marvellous shape with colour and life. The idea did not only ignite a spark of interest but rather set my inspiration on fire…

Candace’s idea was to collect “slow moments” but also encourage people to seek tranquillity as well as sharing their insight. When I commented on the introductory post on her site I compared life with an “indistinct line of trees at the roadside as seen from the window of a speeding car” – moments flying past unnoticed while we seem to focus on chasing time.

Strangely enough it were blurred shapes of trees that accompanied my contribution to the “Slow Moments Project” a few weeks later. Yes, Candace was so kind to include my lines in the collective inspiration of slow moments and not only that. She also described in a beautiful way how the poem appealed to her, one question in particular:

“In eight words, Oliver captured what it is that has been unknowingly driving this entire project. It’s about an awareness, an appreciation, an acknowledgement that just two seconds of our attention can isolate one of a million tiny pieces that make up each day and elevate it to a moment worth remembering.”

The “eight words” refer to the question in the image above, “What is it that turns minutes into moments?”. Turning minutes into moments, probably the essence of being fully awake and immensely alive

Moments are memories in the making. ~ Moments are the absence of time…

Here is the complete poem as it first appeared on “The Great Affair”:

{slow moments}

Keen
to keep pace
with time
we tend to hurry
chasing clock hands,
forgetting
to remember
to slow down
in order
to keep pace
with life.

What is it
that turns minutes
into moments?
And how dare we
to refuse
sometimes??

Moments
are not bound
to places,
but the setting
of our mind.
It’s not the journey we take,
but the journey
that takes us;
not the path ahead,
but the one
within.

Moments
are memories
in the making.

Moments
are the absence
of time…
